FAQ's
1. How is my trash recycled?
Everything in the container is taken to a state-of-the-art materials recovery facility in Stanton where the trash is mechanically sorted. Your time is valuable so we separate and recycle the trash for you. The District recycles over 50% of your trash and is in full compliance with State law.
The District’s program of having residents placing everything into one container and then sorting it at a specialized facility is more efficient than a three container system where the homeowner does the sorting. Only one trash collection vehicle is used to pick up the trash whereas three trucks are needed for the other system. Three trucks create additional air pollution, increases wear and tear on city streets, and increases traffic.
2. What are the best ways I can help the District?
- Decrease your volume of trash by buying in bulk and using products with less packaging. This is called Source Reduction and will help keep our landfills open longer.
- Obtain enough of the standardized trash containers so you rarely have excess trash, such as at Christmas time or during Spring cleaning. Call (949) 646-4617 for additional containers. Excess trash should be placed in a heavy duty plastic bag and placed next to the containers.
- When placing the containers out for collection, place them in the street with the wheels against the curb.
- Perform preventative maintenance on your sewer lateral. Instead of pouring grease down the drain, pour it into a jar with a lid. Leave the jar under the sink until trash day and then place it in the trash. Also, periodically purchase a root control product from the hardware store and pour it into your system. Grease and roots can block flows and cause a costly backup. Please do not use root products with copper sulfate.
- When you mow your lawn, leave the grass clippings right on the lawn. The clippings decompose quickly and release valuable nutrients back into the soil. Grasscycling reduces the volume of trash being collected.
3. What is the holiday trash collection schedule?
The following holidays are observed: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Trash collection will be one day late for theses holidays and for everyday thereafter during the week that includes the holiday.
4. What are the District sewer plans and permit requirements?
