Trash

CR&R provides the Costa Mesa Sanitary District’s residents with curbside refuse and recycling collection services.  Each household receives two 60-gallon automated containers to dispose of refuse and recycling material.  The District is one of the few agencies in Orange County that offers co-mingled services, which means residents can mix their trash and recycling materials in the same container.

So, where does all the recycling and trash go?

Once CR&R trucks pick up the materials on collection day, the material travels directly to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), located in Stanton. After delivery, the recyclables are sorted by hand, and then separated by type, washed (if appropriate), compacted, baled and prepared for sale on the open market.  Tours of CR&R’s MRF are available to CMSD residents. To schedule, please contact AJ Cully at (949) 645-8400 or ajcully@cmsdca.gov.

After the recyclables are sorted and separated, the remaining residue, or trash is taken to the landfill.

Recycling

What exactly can I recycle? Do I have to wash out the items before I place them in the container?

Briefly, any plastics exhibiting the numbers 1-7 in recyclable arrows; most glass food and beverage containers; uncoated and uncontaminated paper including business papers, shoe boxes, newspapers, and cereal and cracker boxes; metals, such as tin and aluminum cans, empty paint cans with dry paint, food and juice cans; and some lawn furniture.  Green waste can also go into your container.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE/ELECTRONIC WASTE

Household hazardous waste includes such items as paint, lawn chemicals, motor oil, solvents, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury thermometers, computer monitors, laptops and television sets. CMSD residents can take these items to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at 17121 Nichols Street-Gate 6, Huntington Beach or to one of three other centers in Orange County. Click here for information about locations, operating hours and important transportation regulations related to hazardous materials.

*Please note that it is the resident's responsibility to remove all personal information from computer hard drives.

In February 2006, new legislation went into effect that bans many electronic devices from the landfills, meaning it is illegal to dispose of these items in the trash. This includes such items as computers, keyboards, stereos, cell phones, cordless phones, VCRs, microwaves, calculators, electronic toys, game consoles, "singing" greeting cards, and athletic shoes and jewelry with flashing lights. CMSD residents can take these items to the Orange Coast College Recycling Center.   Click here for information about OCC Recycling Center operating hours.
