CMSD HOSTS SUCCESSFUL COMPOST GIVEAWAY & SHREDDING EVENT

(Costa Mesa – CA) The Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD) is proud to announce the success of its recent Compost Giveaway & Shredding Event, which drew nearly 900 vehicles and distributed over 50,400 pounds of compost to CMSD residents.  Additionally, the event saw the shredding and recycling of over 11,000 pounds of paper, contributing significantly to the community’s environmental sustainability efforts.

Held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Orange Coast College, the event provided a valuable opportunity for residents to enhance their gardens with high-quality compost and securely dispose of sensitive documents.  The substantial turnout underscores the community’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

CMSD Board President, Mike Scheafer, expressed his enthusiasm about the event’s success, stating, “We are thrilled with the community’s response to our Compost Giveaway & Shredding Event. The turnout exceeded our expectations, highlighting the importance our residents place on environmental sustainability. Events like this are crucial in promoting recycling and proper waste management practices.  We want to thank our partners, CR&R Environmental Services and Orange Coast College for their collaboration in achieving our sustainability goals.”

The compost distributed during the event was made from organic waste collected from CMSD customers' homes, reflecting CMSD’s dedication to closing the loop on waste and promoting a circular economy. By providing free compost, CMSD supports local gardening efforts, contributing to healthier soil and more robust plant growth.

The shredding service offered at the event allowed residents to securely dispose of confidential documents, reducing the risk of identity theft and ensuring the paper is recycled responsibly. The 11,000 pounds of paper shredded will be recycled into new paper products, further supporting sustainable resource management.

CMSD remains committed to providing resources and services that promote environmental sustainability and community engagement. Future events are being planned to continue supporting these efforts and encourage residents to participate in green initiatives.
